Job Description

Western Forest Products' is looking for a Reliability Engineer to join our Port Alberni Sawmill Division, located in Port Alberni B.C.

The Reliability Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Develop and monitor PM programs for critical equipment/infrastructure and develop appropriate condition monitoring techniques
  • Work with trades and supervision to ensure equipment status and equipment deficiencies are adequately captured in work orders and follow up requirements are prioritized.
  • Track the performance of the PM program; developed, scheduled, assigned, completed, reviewed, WO created, closed
  • Analyze equipment operating and downtime data and update the PM program to address significant downtime incidents
  • Troubleshoot equipment that is operating below functional standards. Consult with trades and other staff to resolve technical problems
  • Analyze equipment/ processes and develop opportunities to improve performance in safety, production, up-time, recovery, and quality
  • Assist in ensuring new equipment is properly designed, selected and installed based on life-cycle philosophy for small projects. Monitor and advise on new equipment and tools technology
  • Assist in developing cost-benefit reviews for new Marginal Improvement Plan ideas
  • Assist in developing standard maintenance procedures
  • Assist in the promotion and development of equipment standardization
  • Provides input to a Risk Management Plan that will anticipate reliability-related, and non-reliability-related risks that could adversely impact plant operation.
  • Develops engineering solutions to repetitive failures and all other problems that adversely affect plant operations. These problems include capacity, quality, cost or regulatory compliance issues. To fulfill this responsibility the Reliability Engineer applies:
    • Data analysis techniques that can include:
      • Statistical Process Control
      • Reliability modeling and prediction
      • Fault Tree Analysis
      • Weibull Tree Analysis
      • Six Sigma (6σ) Methodology
    • Root-cause and Root-Cause Failure Analysis (RCA, RCFA)
    • Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACA)

Job Requirements


This role is suited for an EIT or FIT and the ideal candidate will have post-secondary education in an engineering discipline.  Preference will be given to Mechanical or Electrical related disciplines, and/or a Red Seal Journeyman or BS in related technical field in an industrial environment (preferably sawmilling). 

  • Excellent communication and relationship skills
  • Strong planning and organizational and computer skills
  • Change management skills (initiating, facilitating and implementing change)
  • Strong decision making
  • Related experience in an industrial environment
  • Prefer experience with maintenance and or purchasing systems and software
  • knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
  • Understanding of Root Cause Failure Analysis, of the proper elements of a Preventive/Predictive Maintenance Program (including understanding of thermography, vibration analysis, motor analysis, and ultrasound)
