Job Description

Western Forest Products is looking for a Procurement Manager to join our Campbell River Office located in Campbell River B.C.


The Procurement Manager reports to the Director, Procurement and will represent Corporate Procurement in Timberlands Operations. The Procurement Manager will be responsible for managing vendors and contractors for specified supplies, equipment, and services.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in vendor relationship management and contract negotiations. Experience in establishing business process discipline, challenging the status quo and change management are important. In addition, the Procurement Manager will have initiative as a self-starter, a passion for implementing best in class procurement practices, and an analytical/results focused approach to problem solving and identifying value-add creation opportunities.   


Category Strategies

  • Manage and execute the Corporate procurement strategy for assigned categories and related vendor relationships;
  • Lead the division in developing clear and compelling category strategies;
  • Identify opportunities for vendor consolidation, and to leverage the organization’s purchasing power;
  • Understand the business requirements including materials, processes, technical specifications, and value chain; and
  • Remain current on supply market trends, supplier economics, and best practice sourcing.


  • Measure, track and present category spend actuals and forecasts to management team on a monthly, quarterly and period basis; and
  • Identify opportunities and develop strategies and action plans to optimize procurement spend.

Vendor Relations and Contract Management

  • Engage with vendors on a regular basis; and
  • Negotiate strategic purchase contracts and agreements.

Vendor Performance Management

  • On an ongoing basis, monitor, track, evaluate, and work to improve the performance (e.g. quality, delivery, service levels) of their suppliers;
  • Optimize spend and measure key supplier performance metrics; and
  • Facilitate supplier issue resolution and acting as a liaison between corporate and divisional personnel.

Purchasing Strategies

  • Ensure quality products are delivered on time to sites;
  • Ensure products are purchased at negotiated, established prices;
  • Ensure POs are issued accurately and on time; and
  • Providing functional field support for site purchasing and storeroom operations in order to identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.

Project Management

  • Contribute to enterprise wide initiatives and special projects, providing procurement subject matter expertise to streamlining and simplifying business processes; and
  • Perform other projects or duties as assigned by the Director, Procurement.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • 7+ years progressive experience in a procurement role;
  • Professional Purchasing, Supply Chain, or Contract Management designation; and
  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration or Supply Chain Management.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Strong business acumen;
  • Working knowledge of Contract Law;
  • Working knowledge of Supplier Management/Value Chain best practices/techniques;
  • Knowledge of buying/hedging commodity materials;
  • Computer literate with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Proven track record of adding value to companies and providing strong contributions to a Procurement team;
  • Good planning, time management, and organizational skills;
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills;
  • Proven ability to take necessary actions to rectify problems and improve situations;
  • Proven experience as a Category Manager who excels in an evolving environment, handles pressure well and is self-motivated to accomplish assigned tasks timely and efficiently;
  • Sound understanding of contract management, purchasing practices, general business financials, and negotiation strategies;
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills – inclusive of presentation skills and ability to build relationships with employees, leadership and external business associates at any level;
  • ERP experience required, Oracle, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics experience preferred;
  • Ability to work with and support others in a positive way; and
  • Graduate education in business administration is preferred.
