Job Description

The Manager, Domestic Log Sales and Purchases is responsible for the procurement of logs on the domestic market to meet internal consumption demands and the sales of logs in our inventory not required for internal consumption.   Reporting to the General Manager, Fibre Supply, the Manager, Domestic Log Sales and Purchases leads the development and execution of the annual log procurement and sales plan, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and working closely with internal and external stakeholders and business partners.

Safety & Environmental Performance

  • Demonstrate safety performance by ensuring adherence to company safety processes and procedures.

Financial Performance

  • Lead, monitor, execute and report out on domestic log purchases and sales financials/volumes.
  • Recommend effective and innovative strategies to drive cost efficiencies within the Fibre Supply team.
  • Work with Logistics to utilize appropriate delivery methods that meet customer requirements at the lowest possible cost;
  • Monitor log species and classification values to Western’s saw mill divisions to optimize returns from purchases, sales and trades.

Leadership

  • Lead activities related to log procurement and sales and develop strategies to grow purchased volume.
  • Provide leadership by promoting the principles of LEAN in all tasks and assignments;
  • Protect Western’s reputation by managing issues, engaging support from senior leadership as required;
  • Manage, direct and lead the development of the Log Trader team.

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the procurement and sales of domestic logs through the following sources:
    • Direct purchases of booms,
    • Direct sales of booms,
    • Contractual commitments ( both in buying and selling),
    • Acquiring logs from others who have won standing timber bids,
    • Trading logs to others in return for logs we require to meet our internal operating plans,
  • Responsible for developing and achieving volume, cost, inventory and financial targets, as per the annual plan; as well as weekly, monthly and quarterly delivery forecasts;
  • Develop the skills in the Log Trader Team assigned to Fibre Supply;
  • Continuously improve and document procurement strategies both short and long term;
  • Determine the log requirements to be purchased for the upcoming fiscal year, detailing the species, diameter class, and corresponding volumes;
  • Build positive working relationships with other forestry company Log Traders, Sales Managers, Timber Operators and Company Managers to promote Western as the customer of choice;
  • Monitor local and regional log markets to assess delivered log values, delivery costs and opportunities;
  • Negotiate favorable terms with sellers of logs
    • Inspect, and value logs from sellers;
  • Monitor actual log flows (shipments) from purchase suppliers to ensure compliance with quality requirements and agreed shipping schedules;
  • Develop new log sources and consumers to ensure a balance of supply and demand;
  • Assist with establishment and maintenance of a log quality program with all log suppliers that will maximize sawmill throughput, overrun, and grade yield;
  • Work with the Credit department to ensure accounts stay within approved credit limits, and payments are received on time

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in business, forestry or related subject an asset
  • Scaling Ticket an asset
  • 10+ years log purchasing experience

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • An understanding of coastal harvesting practices
  • Knowledge of all of the applications and grade requirements for lumber
  • Proven track record of delivering against stretch sales goals
  • Extensive knowledge of Western Red Cedar, Whitewood and Yellow Cedar market segments, sales channels and customers.
  • Log grading and scaling experience an asset
  • Quality Control experience an asset
