Job Description

Western Forest Products is looking for a GIS Specialist to join our Port Alberni Forest Operation, located in Port Alberni, B.C.

Position Overview:

The GIS Specialist is an advanced GIS position. The GIS Specialist is frequently called upon to support and work with other Analysts assigned to operational and strategic planning requirements. This position has a much stronger emphasis on data management, editing and reporting.

The GIS Specialist contributes specialized GIS skills related to working with LiDAR, GPS data, ArcGIS Server, visual impact assessments and mobile data collection systems. The GIS Specialist takes ownership of GIS data and ensures that data integrity and security are maintained.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

The ideal GIS Specialist is a graduate from a recognized degree or diploma granting institution - advancement beyond Specialist requires formal training. In addition to satisfying the GIS Technician requirements the GIS Specialist has developed skills in geomatics including the following credentials:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • 4+ years of progressive experience directly related to the position purpose.
  • Advanced editing, geoprocessing, manipulating, querying and summarizing of data.
  • Registration or eligibility for professional accreditation preferred.
  • Forestry or other resource sector experience is also preferred.

Key Qualifications:

This position requires an individual to be forward thinking in an often rapidly changing environment. The qualifications that differentiate the GIS Analyst are as follows:

  • Training in geomatics.
  • Training in programming skills using Python, JavaScipt and SQL.
  • Exposure to automation and scripting skills using tools such as Python, Model Builder and FME.
  • Working understanding ESRI software suite of tools.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow standards.
  • Training with GPS data processing, loading and storage.
  • Basic understanding of business drivers and performance measures.
  • Customer service oriented disposition.
