Job Description

Western Forest Products is seeking an Area Planner for our Central Island Forest Operation (CIFO) located on Vancouver Island, B.C.

Under the supervision of the Operations Planner, the Area Planner plays a lead role in Forest Operations Planning, providing ongoing tenure administration and permit acquisition services.  The incumbent is responsible for engineering related planning and operational forestry related to the engineering, road construction planning and harvest forecasting within the designated TFL.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and positive individual who will work to deliver and support the following key functions and responsibilities:

  • A safety culture where we care for each other.
  • Manage, supervise, and assist with the operational layout program.
  • Ensure consistency of the planning process with higher level requirements, government legislation, and CSA certification plans.
  • Prepare site plans and road permit applications.
  • Provide cutting permit application support.
  • Prepare road reactivation, maintenance, and deactivation plans.
  • Support timber sort and block margin forecasting.
  • Maintain relationships with local government and the general public through trust, respect, and strong communication skills.
  • Requires a degree or diploma in forestry from a recognized post-secondary institution and be a registered member in good standing with the ABCFP.
  • Requires an enjoyment for coastal field work and the experience necessary to be proficient in complex road and block engineering.
  • Requires an understanding of forestry legislation and associated guidance.
  • Computer skills required include the use of Road Eng, Microsoft Office, and GPS software.  Experience with Cenfor and Forest Ops software is considered an asset.

This role will be based our of Western's Menzies Bay Office, located 15 minutes north of Campbell River.  Routine travel between the operations within CIFO will be required, that includes Gold River, and Woss.



Job Requirements


Education and Experience

  • 5-7 years of experience in Operations Planning with increasingly responsible roles;
  • Post-secondary degree in Forestry or related degree in Natural Resource Management; and
  • Current accreditation with the Association of BC Forest Professionals.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Excellent understanding and comprehension of Forest Management and Land Use Planning;
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment with good communication skills and an ability to speak confidently in a public setting;
