Job Description

Western Forest Products is looking for a Senior Maintenance Manager to join our Campbell River Office located in Campbell River, B.C.


With the overarching objective of Defining a Higher Standard in safety and continuous improvement, the Senior Maintenance Manager is responsible for the overall management of the company’s equipment and maintenance operations for the Timberlands harvesting and road building operations.


Reporting to the Vice President, Timberlands, the Senior Maintenance Manager will be responsible for planning and implementing a full maintenance program for the fleet of heavy duty equipment and company maintenance operations. This role provides financial oversight, maintenance planning and overall delivery and execution of maintenance operations for multiple sites and will be responsible for driving improved equipment efficiency and reducing overall costs. This position is located in Campbell River, on Vancouver Island, BC.


Safety and Environmental Performance

  • Provide leadership in safety and environmental stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence of company safety and sustainability processes and procedures;
  • Enforce all health and workplace safety standards to ensure a healthy and safe work environment;
  • Collaborate with the Health & Safety team and other stakeholders to proactively develop improved safety processes and best practices;
  • Stay abreast of industry innovations and trends in safety and environmental performance and new technology or equipment to improve company margins;
  • Ensure all maintenance activities meet WorkSafeBC regulations and Company standards.

Financial Performance 

  • Responsible for the overall maintenance budget and utilizes financial data and analytics to identify cost saving opportunities and other improvements;
  • Budget forecast for future procurement of equipment;
  • Responsible for identifying opportunities for capital investments and follow up during the investment process;
  • Responsible for optimizing maintenance related inventories;
  • Responsible for selecting and maintaining the company’s fleet of commercial equipment to support smooth functioning while managing the records, licenses, inspections, warranties, and service agreements.

Equipment Management  

  • Develop and implement strategies to build and maintain an effective and sustainable equipment program that adheres to safety, compliance, regulations and corporate policies;
  • Ensure safe and reliable equipment is available to meet operational requirements;
  • Inspects facilities to determine proper inventory, utilization, maintenance, and maximize equipment profitability and utilization;
  • Responsible for the planning and execution of all regular maintenance requirements and lifecycle renewal requirements in an organized, efficient and cost-effective manner;
  • Manage existing and develop new vendor relationships;
  • Partnering with the Procurement and Contract Management team, negotiate contracts, purchase agreements and maintenance service agreements for the Corporation’s equipment through continuous pricing, service and other improvements;
  • Participate in the estimating and bid process for determining equipment needs and costs of prospective projects;
  • Establish short and long term agreements when necessary to lock in pricing and services for an agreed duration;
  • Monitor company policies for equipment use;
  • Assist in the establishment and maintenance of capitalized equipment records and procedures, for all equipment owned by the Company; and
  • Assist in the development of yard and equipment inventory procedures and reports. 


  • Provide leadership and direction to improve safety, reduce operational costs, and drive efficiencies with company staff, unionized employees and contractors;
  • Ensure employee and contractor awareness and compliance with Company safety and environmental policies, procedures, standards and other regulatory requirements;
  • In charge of management of company’s equipment and maintenance operations. Schedules and prioritizes equipment repairs and maintenance as well as assigning equipment to crews and projects; Oversees multiple maintenance mechanics, establishes productivity goals and tracks progress of work;
  • Oversight and coordination of all regional maintenance activities to optimize the availability and safe operation of equipment;
  • Coordinates maintenance and capital projects with the Timberlands Operations team, with focus to improve safety, productivity and overall cost effectiveness;
  • Supervise Maintenance Managers for all maintenance projects to ensure minimal downtime;
  • Working in alignment with the Vice President Timberlands, analyzes the Timberlands equipment complement and in partnership with Maintenance Managers, look for opportunities to make strategic moves to improve efficiencies and reduce costs; and
  • Control costs according to budgets and ensure efficient and adequate use of resources, including equipment.

Job Requirements


Education and Experience:

  • 10+ of years of experience managing an industrial maintenance department, preferably in logging or similar heavy industry;
  • Heavy Duty Mechanic TQ with Inter Provincial endorsement, post – secondary degree, or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in supervising and managing salaried and unionized employees;
  • Experience in managing contractors and service providers;
  • Experience in the function, operation, financial modeling and decision making in the maintenance and upkeep of heavy equipment.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of logging and/or heavy equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Demonstrated financial and business acumen, understanding of financial reporting, forecasting and management of large capital equipment budgets;
  • Strong maintenance management and planning, with demonstrated project management skills;
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving, and logical thinking skills;
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset and a track record of successfully implementing technology-based change; and
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, proficiency in the use of Project Management and equipment efficiency software is desired.
