POSITION OVERVIEW

Western Forest Products is hiring for Area Planner's, Field Planner's, and Assistant Planner's to join our Forestry Planning team. We are looking for RPF’s and RFT’s from recent college graduates to experienced forestry planners. We are recruiting to achieve our vision of being the best Forestry Team in British Columbia. WFP has the most diversified and largest basket of forest tenures on the coast. Our operations are on most of Vancouver Island and include portions of the Great Bear Rainforest. RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety & Environmental Performance

  • Provide leadership in safety and environmental stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence of company safety and sustainability processes and procedures. This includes support of the EMS, CSA and/or SFI certification systems.

Financial Performance

  • Support the delivery of the annual silviculture budget for the designated TFL or Forest Operation;
  • Recommend effective and innovative strategies to drive cost efficiencies in the operation.
  • Utilize financial data to analyze trends and make recommendations to improve efficiency;
  • Recommend effective and innovative strategies to drive cost efficiencies in the operation.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction to improve safety, reduce operational costs, and maximize value and margins while meeting customer requirements;
  • Create and sustain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement;
  • Protect Western’s reputation by managing issues, engaging support from senior leadership as required;
  • Actively maintain current and potential mutually beneficial relationships with First Nations partners, Government agencies and public and private interest groups to support access to incremental fibre; and
  • Liaison with Corporate Forestry Planners to assist in strategic planning.
  • Participate in the consultation process with First Nations and other stakeholders, acting as a member of the information sharing team.

Operational

  • Responsible for implementation of all basic silvicultural activities including but not limited to planting, brushing, burning and survey programs and ensure that the projects are in compliance with various Operational Plans and Company Policies.
  • Completion of record keeping that documents field surveys and forward planning activities.
  • Assist Area Forester-Silviculture to plan, schedule and manage short term tactical plans for basic silviculture projects;
  • Work with Area Forester-Silviculture to deliver on the commitments of the silviculture budgets;
  • Support the coordination and management of Company certification systems (EMS, CSA, SFI ) within the designated TFL or Forest Operation;
  • Assess completed activities for adherence to plans and enact corrective measures, as required;
  • Support the development and/or implementation of various Forest Management Strategies that may be applicable to the designated TFL, Forest Operation or entire Timberlands
  • Assist in the preparation of the various plans and assessments associated with cutblock development including:
  • Site Plans, Harvest, Road, Silviculture and Deactivation Instructions, Cutting Permit Submissions, Road Permit Submissions and related engineering projects, and preparation of other applications as necessary.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • 2-7 years of experience in silviculture/ Operations Planning related activities with increasingly responsible roles;
  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in Forestry or related degree in Natural Resource Management; and
  • Current accreditation with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (RPF or RFT).

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Good understanding and comprehension of Forest Management and Land Use Planning;
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and possess good communication skills;
  • Good working knowledge of legal regulations and requirements related to BC crown and private land forest operations;
  • Experience with forestry software (CENFOR (GENUS), Survey Wizard, Plant Wizard) as well as technology (i.e. LiDAR) would be considered an asset.
